2010 Johnson County Fair Family History Contest

  1. The purpose of the Johnson County Family History Contest is to promote the Heritage of Johnson County. It is designed to encourage Johnson County citizens of all ages to learn about their personal heritage as well as their county's history. Entries will also serve to preserve segments of Johnson County history.

  2. Entries must have been compiled by submitter/s. If multiple individuals participated in the compilation, all must be noted. If more than one age group is represented, the entry will be judged in the oldest division.

  3. Entry must be ready for display, either as a wall hanging or book form. Submitter name, address, and age (for Youth division) must be attached on the back or other inconspicuous location.

  4. Judges will be supplied by the Society and their decision is final.

Awards


  1. First, Second, and Third place winning entries in each category and class will be published in the Johnson County Historical Society's Journal. Other entries may be chosen for publication by the Judges. Entries to be published will remain in the custody of the Society until publication. All others should be checked out with other fair exhibits.

  2. Cash awards directly from the Society will be as follows: First place, $15; Second place, $10; and Third place, $5.


Categories


  1. STORIES

     

    • Write a story of a person or persons, event, location or family of Johnson County.

    • Identified photos are encouraged (Good copies, not originals)

    • Entries will be judged for a possible 100 points as follows: Research and documentation, 40 points; Readability, 30 points; Appearance, 30 points.


  1. PHOTO PEDIGREE CHART


    • At least 3 generations represented by individual photos in a chart form. The connection to entrant must be indicated (Parents, Grandparents, etc.)

    • Entries will be judged for a possible 100 points as follows: Appearance, 35 points; Originality, 35 points; Completeness, 30 points.


  1. HERITAGE PRESERVATION


    • Entries will be judged for a possible 100 points as follows: Appearance /Neatness, 30 points; Originality, 30 points; Proper archival techniques, 40 points.

    • Classes

      1. A scrapbook page or pages depicting a family event, Johnson County historical event or site using proper archival techniques.

      2. Shadow box

      3. Framed certificate, etc.

      4. Other (for example -- Grandma's hankies made into a quilt, etc.)

     

  1. MY FAMILY PORTRAIT


    • A representation of the entrant's family in any medium.

    • Entries will be judged for a possible 100 points as follows: Originality, 50 points; Appearance/Neatness, 50 points.

    • Classes

      1. Drawing or painting

      2. Photograph

      3. Sculpture

      4. Building blocks

      5. Other (for example -- rock family, doll groups, etc.)
